PREQUEL TO the orchid Farmer’s sacrifice, the red crest series
THREE BOYS. WORLDS APART. ONE SHARED DESTINY.
His mother wanted him dead. Never before had she stood so frozen, her face trembling, her fingers instinctively clenching the handle of a sword that was not there. The early moonlight illuminated the back of her figure. The deep shadows over her eyes could not hide the ungodly glint emerging from her soul.
Han inched into the courtyard, his hands trembling, while the older woman stood silently with teeth clenched. He was sixteen and tall for his age, and already he had thick eyebrows and a chiseled jaw. With a thump he dropped to his knees in front of her.
There were voices around him—some of them angry, most of them timid. He vaguely heard their murmurs stopping and starting, their jeering and weeping. Many of them were excited that something bad was happening. His brothers were cursing him, hoping he would die, while the woman he called mother demanded his life.
He had no choice but to offer it. She had raised him since he was seven years old. He would have been dead or worse without her and her husband, Master Zuo.
